Why We Manage Stress

Why We Manage Stress

Life is full of stressful events. Just when we think we have conquered one, another stressful situation pops up. As adults, we know our stress transitions from deadlines on homework to deadlines at work, on taxes, on bills. However, we know that those stressors as kids and teenagers were real and pressing.

According to the American Psychological Association, 30% percent of teens feel overwhelmed and depressed as a result of stress overload. Growing up is tough. Teens today are under immense pressure and sometimes it can feel as if they are out in the ocean being tossed and turned by turbulent waves. But that turbulence is only on the surface of the water, as you go to deeper and deeper levels of the ocean, there is more and more calm. Transcendental Meditation® is the technique to effortlessly let go of that surface tension and sink into that depth of calm.

Utilizing Our Full Potential

With goal-setting, it’s important to have perseverance and push upwards, but what if we could make that process easier? By accessing our own inherent intelligence via the Transcendental Meditation® technique we utilize our full potential and are able to move towards goals with less turmoil. Regular practice of TM erodes the effects of stress and creates skillful action allowing us to do more, with less energy expended.

When stress begins to melt away, that’s when the real self begins to emerge. At Maharishi School, we believe change begins within and we give you the tools needed to beat stress. We teach you how to transcend turbulence and to access that rich reservoir that is at the deepest level within.

Why We Use the Science of Creative Intelligence

Why We Use the Science of Creative Intelligence

The world is a lovely, complex, and connected thing. We see things that are true and observable across all of nature. At Maharishi School, we want to define these observations to make them easier to see. We call this the Science of Creative Intelligence.

Our students have a unique interdisciplinary course focusing on the Science of Creative Intelligence where they see underlying, universal principles that are common to the structure and functioning of life—their academic subjects, in nature, and in themselves. For example, we see how life is structured in layers: whether in the earth’s crust, our government, the analysis of literature, a math theorem, or one’s family and personality.

This is one way Maharishi School cultivates vertical thinking: making connections between all the details on the surface of life with the big ideas at their basis.

SCI Classes

In SCI classes, students learn that the laws of real-world science are the same laws that guide human growth. For example, one of the principles is: Every action has a reaction. In science, we see this in literally everything. If temperatures rise on our planet, that means drastic changes for many species. A small change in one part of the world can lead to a ripple effect globally as in the butterfly effect.

In the same way, every action has a reaction in our lives. The words we use, the actions we take, and the education we embrace all have an affect. By understanding this principle in depth, students see the power they carry and are able to better understand the mechanics of not only the physical world but also the mechanics of their behavior and life. They learn these simple but powerful truths starting in Kindergarten.

Why We Practice Yoga Asanas

Why We Practice Yoga Asanas

The Origins of Yoga

You may have noticed yoga studios and classes appearing just about everywhere in the United States. We love the health trend! However, yoga originated in India and is part of the larger system of health called Ayurveda. Ayurveda is an Eastern modality of wellness that views good digestion as the beginning of wellness. Ayurveda suggests using yoga asanas, specific yoga poses that promote whole body wellness and support digestion, to balance the body. Because of this understanding, we teach our students how to do these poses.

Daily Routine

At Maharishi School the underlying message in all we do for and with our students is this: everything you need to succeed is already inside of you. Teaching children to do yoga and meditate is an integral part of this curriculum; these tools will serve them for a lifetime.

Twice a day, every day, Maharishi School students practice their yoga asanas, then settle down to meditate for ten-fifteen minutes before heading back into the activities of the day. In addition to physical stretching and toning, asanas are an excellent way for kids to relieve stress. Yoga helps students to be more mindful of their breath, and how breathing in different ways can enliven or relax the physiology. It improves balance, coordination, and posture. Yoga brings awareness and energy to every part of the body and teaches kids how to relax and recharge by tuning in to themselves.

Students leave yoga and meditation settled and focused. Maharishi School teachers and staff also do asanas and meditate, which prepares them to give their best to their students each day.

Why We Incorporate Project-based Learning

Why We Incorporate Project-based Learning

The Love of Learning

At Maharishi School, we want to instill the love of learning in each of our students. We recognize that no one, not even the most developed and mature adult, wants to spend years and years of their life doing something he or she doesn’t want to do. In reality, learning is something we must do our entire life, whether in a job or in relationships or as we travel to new cultures. With that understanding, we believe it is important to promote the love of learning at a young age to teach our students to find subjects they are passionate about and innovative ways to learn about their passions. This is why we structure in project-based learning time.

Daily Routine

Every day students are given 70 minutes to work on a passion project. They problem-solve, experiment, falter and keep striving. Through the process, they learn real-world skills that will serve them when they are adults working on projects at their workplaces. Some of the Learning Goals for project learning are creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, a growth mindset, societal impact and service, interdisciplinary integration, development of student portfolios.

Each project is either designed by a teacher or proposed by the student at the conception stage and addresses an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. The students work either independently or in small teams and exercise real-life skills in their areas of interest while being fully supported by teachers, community experts, and leaders brought in to match the students’ interests. At the end of each quarter, all the students’ projects are showcased as part of a community-wide event.

College Preparation

We are seeing a shift in college preparation. Instead of judging students by their SAT or ACT scores, colleges are taking a more holistic approach. They take into consideration SAT or ACT score, but they also look at the student for their entire high school experience. This is displayed in a portfolio. In our project time, students are able to develop diverse portfolios.

Why We Teach the Transcendental Meditation® Technique

Why We Teach the Transcendental Meditation® Technique

At the center of our Consciousness-based education is the Transcendental Meditation® (TM) technique. To transcend, by definition, means to go beyond human limitations and to break boundaries. At Maharishi School, we teach a technique to break internal boundaries and to sink deep into yourself, to tap into your essence and live in a state of flow. We believe that all parts of ourselves should be developed – the body, mind, heart, and consciousness – therefore the practice of TM® is required for all students. Our school day starts and ends with a few minutes of the Transcendental Meditation® (TM) technique.

TM® is a simple technique that is easily taught through one-on-one instruction by a certified teacher. It’s not a religion, philosophy or lifestyle. More than 340 scientific studies have been published in leading journals showing its efficacy in all areas of physical and mental health. It’s garnered the praise of distinguished institutions like the National Health Institute, American Psychological Association, University of Michigan, and American University.

At Maharishi School, we use Transcendental Meditation® (TM) technique to provide students an effective way to balance their own body and mind to promote optimal learning. We want to set our kids up with the best tools in order to succeed. We believe TM® is one of those tools.

Why We Use Consciousness-Based Education

Why We Use Consciousness-Based Education

Imagine your day starting with time to clear your mind, focus, and calm your body. Imagine you get to start every day finding strength, peace, and understanding within. Imagine being given this tool as a child so that you are able to use it throughout life to manage stress, persevere, and succeed regardless of the situation.

Doesn’t that sound fantastic and useful?

This is the opportunity we provide our students through Transcendental Meditation, which is at the center of our Consciousness-based education. Every single day, students and teachers at Maharishi School close their eyes for a few minutes to practice the Transcendental Meditation® technique and experience a state of rest that is deeper than sleep.

When your body is rested, powerful chain reactions are set forth. Blood pressure normalizes. Heart rates slow down. The brain gets more oxygen. Big problems become small problems and stress becomes manageable.

A Rainy Night Meets the Transcendental Meditation® technique

Imagine driving through a rainy, stormy night without your headlights working. The road is dark and you have to drive with fear, small mistakes almost guaranteed to happen. That’s what our brains and bodies are like when we’re stressed.

Getting adequate sleep is like having functional headlights. This is the absolute, bare minimum. You can see what is ahead and the stress lessens, but that drive down a dark road remains challenging. However, practicing the Transcendental Meditation® technique does more – it quiets the stormy mind, removing the rain so we can see and think clearly.

At Maharishi School, we believe reducing stress and improving brain function is absolutely imperative. Kids have so much on their plate, so many external pressures, and so much to balance. We believe it is essential to provide our students with the tools to address these stresses. As adults, it is understood that stress does not disappear, but we rise to function properly under that stress. Consciousness-based education revolves around that belief. We don’t just fill students heads with information, we systematically expand the container of knowledge, the student’s own consciousness. With this expansion, absorbing new ideas becomes simpler, friendships deepen, and you start to understand how you are connected to and interconnected with the world.

We call this Consciousness-Based education. Because expanding consciousness is a game changer.

Why We Choose Organic Food

Why We Choose Organic Food

Maharishi School is committed to offering its students the healthiest meal choices possible. To maximize learning and provide the greatest nutritional value, Maharishi School encourages students to eat a healthy, organic diet.

We want to physically provide the nourishment each child needs to thrive. As part of our health education about the Eastern modality of health, Ayurveda, we build our lunches to encourage healthy digestion. Ayurveda promotes the benefits of healthy, balanced, and properly cooked food.

Our Cafeteria

For those who prefer to eat in our cafeteria, we serve a delicious and wholesome organic vegetarian lunch. Protein is provided by a variety of legumes, tofu, nuts, and dairy products. The daily lunch also offers whole grains, a variety of salads and vegetables, fresh fruit, and delicious desserts. Most of the vegetables are grown in our own campus greenhouses or locally grown in Fairfield.

organic foodsThere are many reasons we choose organic food. According to the Huffington Post, “fewer toxins will go straight into their bodies,” when kids eat organic food. Not only that, but fewer toxins go into our environment, which provides a safer, more sustainable future for our kids.

We are sensitive to the different dietary needs of students so we allow students to bring a packed lunch and eat in the cafeteria. That way, they are able to select what food sounds good to them or meets their specific dietary needs. However, we work hard to make sure our lunches, provided by the school, are well balanced with consideration to food allergies and sensitivities.

Outside Our Cafeteria

In addition to the food we serve on campus, students may go home at lunchtime and eat with their families or host families or they may choose from a wide variety of restaurants in the city of Fairfield. We want to give students to nourish themselves in a way that works for them.

For students who dine out, the downtown area of Fairfield is only a short walk, bike ride or drive from the school. Over 35 restaurants offer a great variety of meals including Asian, American, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine, which include meat entrees. Fairfield has more restaurants per capita than San Francisco, California!

Performing and Visual Arts

Performing and Visual Arts

Maharishi School offers a wide range of activities to teach, inspire, and provide students with useful life-tools. Among the most important of these are the Performing and Visual Arts. Always, we are encouraging students to…

Performing and Visual ArtsKnow Yourself

Think Deeply

Unleash Your Creativity

Succeed

Performing Arts

The performing arts shine in Maharishi School’s project period. Project choices rotate from play productions, video creations, musical theater, music and recording arts, and the Iowa High School Speech Association competitions (IHSSA).

The IHSSA Large Group Competition and Individual Competition are state-wide dramatic competitions involving schools from all over Iowa. It is a three-level competition beginning with District competitions and then State competition. Teams or individuals are selected from the State level performances to either perform or be recognized at the All-State competition. If a school is selected to perform then that team has the chance to compete for the Critics’ Choice award.

Maharishi School has been competing in the IHSSA Large Group Competition since 1988 and has received Critic’s Choice awards 18 times in the areas of Musical Theater (1), One Act Play(1), Choral Reading(6), Group Mime(6), Solo Mime(2), Reader’s Theater(1) and Radio Broadcasting(1). We have also had teams perform at All-State in the categories of Ensemble Acting and TV News and received the sweepstakes trophy for the most entries honored at All-State in 1998 and again in 2003.

All 9th-grade students take a performing arts class and then have the option of continuing to compete in the IHSSA Large Group or Individual competition. All Upper School students may participate in IHSSA competitions by selecting it as their project period in the 2nd and 3rd quarter of each year.

Visual Arts

In the study of art at Maharishi School, students gain a working understanding of the principles of art and design and become familiar with analyzing and understanding artworks. Students are encouraged to develop personal reactions and ideas. This helps to nourish the students’ awareness through self-referral and reflection; they become more visually aware, flexible, and open to the arts.

“The purpose of art is to elevate the viewer, to raise his level of consciousness. The artist while creating, dives deep within, contacts the field of pure Creative Intelligence, and rises to express creativity. The viewer experiences the artist’s work of art from the outside and through the work of art, dives deep within himself. The work of art does not sit permanently or statically. The consciousness that the art reflects and contains bounces into the viewer and enlivens his being. Successful art keeps enlivening infinity in the people who enjoy it, and continues to resonate infinity in itself generation after generation.” — Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Maharishi School students are encouraged to follow their passions and utilize the 70-minute project period for developing their talents. Students have pursued watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting, Japanese woodworking, textile art, photography, ceramics, and architectural design.

The Halls of Maharishi School

The halls of Maharishi School are vibrant, energetic, and teeming with positivity. Daily, both teachers and students alike walk by many different displays of inspiration and artwork. However, each of these displays serves a purpose.

Forbes Powerful WomenInspiration and Artwork

At Maharishi School, we want to encourage students to draw from whatever inspires them. Life requires innovation and creativity. We want to foster those skills in each and every student. However, each student is an individual. What inspires one student won’t inspire the next. With that in mind, we want to display a wide array of visual inspirations. If you were to walk through the halls of Maharishi School, you would see various displays on our walls. Some of these displays include Forbes Power Women, African American Musicians, Powerful Women in History, The Trevor Project posters, and our own students’ artwork.

At Maharishi School, we also use the creativity of our current and former students to spur on our climate of innovation. This is evidenced in our Project-Based Learning curriculum and our extracurricular activities. One activity we are very proud of is our Destination Imagination program.

Destination ImagiNation

Maharishi School won 1st Place at Destination ImagiNation Global Finals in creative problem-solving. Alista Wikle, Philip Winer, Loreena Hansen, Drew Schoenfeld, and Caleb Mullenneaux won the first place at the international level of the Destination Imagination competition, as well as the Da Vinci Award for outstanding creativity. Watch their performance here!

Destination ImagiNation (DI) is the world’s largest creativity and problem-solving competition and inspires participants in its programs to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions to solve the mind-bending challenges. The students must come up with solutions to the challenges on their own, without adult interference.

Meet Our Students

Maharishi School students are as diverse a group of students as you’ll ever meet, but they’re all alike in one important way—the assertion of their unique personalities.  When conformity isn’t socially mandated, when self-expression and love are encouraged, when opportunities are afforded to learn about, expand, and share what makes them shine, that’s when you see kids who are able to grow towards and fulfill their highest potential.

Our students came to Maharishi School on a lot of different paths. They are treated and taught as individuals. Each student and their family is unique. Instead of trying to tell their stories, we want them to tell their stories. The following are testimonials from parents of students who attend Maharishi School.

Parent Testimonials

Paul

Living in Atlanta, we came to visit Fairfield and Maharishi School with our children for one week. After one week, we decided to move and try it for a year. Our work allowed us to live anywhere. 10 years later we’re happier than we can imagine. Our oldest is off to college, our 10th grader is thriving, and we are part of a close, diverse community of adults and children that I couldn’t imagine being without. Come.

Craig

If I were asked to rank all the accredited private schools in the United States, I would immediately select the award-winning Maharishi School as #1. My son was fortunate to attend from pre-school through 12th grade, and, as a result, he has become a successful, caring, responsible, happy, and healthy adult with a brilliant future. The faculty, administration, unique curriculum, growth opportunities, extracurricular activities, parental support, alumni success, and highly supportive environment are second to no other place. See “Maharishi School” video on YouTube to get some feeling for what is special about Maharishi School!

Promila

This is a beautiful school. Children are nurtured by wonderful enlightened human beings. I have witnessed my children performing so well in the school and showcasing their best creative skills. A big thanks to school administration and teachers for making this school a paradise for children.

Carol

My kids have flourished beyond my expectations. Every year, they get more clear on who they are and the School gives them the time and space to explore and develop their passions. It’s a loving, rigorous, and innovative place.

Celeste

I love this school for its small class sizes, interest in developing every child’s inner and outer potential, and family like atmosphere. It’s hard to imagine my children going to school anywhere else.

Emily

My son has attended Maharishi School for the last 3 years and he loves the school so much. The teachers are amazing, the curriculum and activities offered are second to none, and the faculty and staff are always striving to improve and evolve with the children’s and the community’s growing needs. I highly recommend this school.
