Pottery
The Program
Pottery at Maharishi School is an introduction to the timeless art of ceramics. We will delve into the history and science of clay, learning how the correct tools and methods help us transform a simple lump of earth into a durable object of expression.
We answer the essential questions every new potter asks: Why did it blow up in the kiln? How do I keep the bottom from falling off? Why didn’t the glaze turn out as I expected? We turn these moments of potential disaster into opportunities for learning, embracing a process that demands stability, adaptability, and growth. Through hands-on practice, you learn to navigate the challenges of clay and begin to express your unique creative vision.
As foundational skills are developed, the course culminates in an introduction to the dynamic and exciting Raku firing process, exploring the American adaptation of this ancient Japanese technique.

- The Nature of Clay: Understanding what clay is, its origins, and its chemical properties.
- Hand-Building Fundamentals: Mastering the core techniques of pinch pots, coil construction, and slab building.
- Introduction to the Potter’s Wheel: Learning the basics of centering clay and shaping simple forms.
- Glazing & Firing: An overview of glaze chemistry, application methods, and kiln operation.
- Historical Context: Exploring the history of ceramics in the development of human culture through videos, discussions, and examples from the masters.
- Studio Practice: Keeping a detailed journal for inspiration, technical notes, and the development of self-critique.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
