Supporting international students
Our English Language Learner (ELL) program is designed to support international students as they transition into our academic environment.
Through personalized instruction and immersive experiences, our ELL students develop strong language skills, cultural competence, and the confidence to excel in their studies. Our program offers small class sizes, dedicated ELL teachers, and a variety of resources to help students succeed. By joining our ELL program, international students gain a solid foundation in English, build lasting friendships, and become well-rounded global citizens.
The Program
English Language Learners
Top colleges in Iowa actively seek out Maharishi School graduates. Our support structure gives the international Maharishi School students a competitive edge that makes them sought-after candidates.
Our ELL program is designed to meet a wide range of student needs. Recognizing that students need different forms of support, from vocabulary development to comprehending complex texts to preparing papers for submission to science competitions, teachers provide ongoing evaluation of student English language strengths and weaknesses.
In Upper School, most international students come with excellent academic skills overall, prepared to compete for admission to the best colleges and universities. The primary focus of our ELL program is to help them develop competence in every aspect of the English language–speaking, listening, reading and writing–to match their overall academic prowess.
Levels of ELL support include:
- Pull-out classes taught by the ELL teachers, for those whose EL levels indicate the need for one-on-one or very small-group support, for no more than three periods a day (generally English and social studies classes)
- Support by ELL teachers who continually liaise with content-area teachers and students to make adaptations to content and assessments as needed
ELL specialists and content-area teachers work closely to advocate for and oversee the success of our international students.
