Maharishi School has competed in the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group Competition since 1988, earning 18 Critic's Choice awards across musical theater, one-act play, choral reading, mime, and radio broadcasting.
Performing Arts
Project period offerings rotate through play productions, video creation, musical theater, and music and recording arts. High School students may select IHSSA competition as their project for the year, competing from the District level through All-State.
Music
Music and recording arts is a regular Project Period offering, and choral reading has been part of the school’s IHSSA competition program since 1988. Students explore music both as ensemble performance and studio production.
Visual Arts
Students work in watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting, Japanese woodworking, textile art, photography, ceramics, and architectural design — developing a working understanding of art and design and a personal creative voice.
Dance
A continuing partnership with the Iowa Dance Collective brings professional-level dance instruction to High School students, culminating in an annual public performance.
Pottery
An introduction to ceramics — hand-building fundamentals, the potter's wheel, glaze chemistry, and kiln safety — culminating in the Raku firing process, an American adaptation of the ancient Japanese technique.
