Sustainability isn’t a program bolted onto Maharishi School — it’s the character of the whole community. Our campus is a Blue Zones community, and Fairfield around it is one of the country’s most committed green towns. Students grow up steeped in it.
On Campus: A Blue Zones Community
Our campus is part of the Blue Zones Project, a well-being initiative that makes the healthy choice the easy choice — focusing on the “life radius” close to home, connecting students with older adults, and building habits around real food, natural movement, and purpose. A working greenhouse and our Seed to Table program put that ethos on students’ plates.
In Fairfield: A Leader in Green Living
Fairfield is one of the largest markets for organic food in America, with the surrounding county devoted to more sustainable, organic acreage than any other in Iowa. The town co-hosts an annual EcoFair with Maharishi International University — the first U.S. university to offer a Sustainable Living degree — and is home to one of the country’s largest concentrations of solar homes, a weekly farmers market, and the 16-mile Fairfield Loop Trail. It’s a place where caring for the environment is simply how things are done.
