Trojans Stay in the Fight: Fairfield Tennis Upsets Mt. Pleasant in a 5-4 Thriller

There’s nothing quite like a home match with something on the line — and on Thursday evening at Punj Tennis Center, the Fairfield Trojans delivered exactly that.
In one of the most meaningful matches of the Southeast Conference season, the Fairfield boys’ tennis team handed Mt. Pleasant its first conference loss of the year, winning 5-4 in a hard-fought, wire-to-wire battle. The victory keeps the conference title race very much alive and puts Fairfield right on the Panthers’ heels heading into the final stretch of the season.
A Performance to Remember
Fairfield came out swinging, winning four of the six singles matches in convincing fashion.
At the top of the lineup, Bowen Zhang set the tone early, defeating Mt. Pleasant’s Sawyer Fulton 8-4 at No. 1 singles. Pranit Ruia followed with a strong performance at No. 3, taking down Grayson Walker 8-3. Caelen Chang dominated the No. 5 slot, beating Carter Gehling 8-2, and Yangyi Zhong capped the singles run with an 8-4 victory over Matthew Del Valle at No. 6.
When it came to doubles, Fairfield needed just one win to lock up the match — and Ruia and Chang delivered. The No. 2 doubles pairing, which had just impressed in singles, came together as a team and knocked off Walker and Gehling 8-2 to secure the win for Fairfield.
It was a complete team effort — exactly the kind of performance that earns results when the stakes are highest.
What This Means for the Conference Race
Before Thursday, Mt. Pleasant was on the verge of clinching the Southeast Conference title. The Panthers came into the match with a 7-0 overall record and controlled their own destiny. Fairfield changed all of that.
Mt. Pleasant still leads the conference at 7-1 overall and 6-1 in SEC play. But Fairfield is now 5-2 — in both overall and conference records — and very much in the conversation. With games remaining against the rest of the field, the Trojans have put themselves in a position where anything is possible.
The race is officially back on.
Punj Tennis Center: Home Court Advantage
Thursday’s win was also a reminder of what Punj Tennis Center means to this program. Named in honor of a longtime community supporter, the facility gives Fairfield a genuine home court — and the Trojans made the most of it. The atmosphere, the energy, and the pride in wearing the Fairfield uniform were on full display.
Keep the Momentum Going
The Trojans aren’t done. After Thursday’s win, Fairfield headed south to take on last-place Keokuk (0-6, 0-5) — a match that offered an opportunity to build on the momentum and strengthen their conference standing.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the standings as the SEC season enters its final chapter. One thing is clear: if you’re counting out Fairfield, you haven’t been paying attention.
