We’ve always believed in empowering our students with unique, hands-on learning experiences, and our brand new Aviation project-based learning program for Upper School students is truly taking that philosophy to the skies! We were absolutely thrilled – though not entirely surprised – by the incredible enthusiasm and overwhelming response to this groundbreaking program, led by the brilliant Dr. Kurt Kleinschnitz.
Eleven eager students are currently immersing themselves in the fascinating world of aviation, absorbing every detail from the comprehensive Pilot Handbook. Their dedication is palpable as they delve into the foundational knowledge required to navigate the complexities of flight.
The program is designed to be a thrilling journey of discovery and skill development. Students will have the incredible opportunity to:
- Fly an actual airplane and work towards obtaining a student pilot license.
- Master drone operation and earn their drone pilot license.
- Hone their skills on the Microsoft Flight Simulator, practicing maneuvers and navigation in a realistic virtual environment.
- Prepare rigorously for the FAA written test, gaining the essential aeronautical knowledge required for licensure.
- Get added to the FAA Airman Registry, a significant step in their aviation career path.
- Even explore the potential to pursue a commercial pilot license in the future!
This isn’t just about reading textbooks; it’s about practical application and real-world experience. Next week, the students will get their first taste of hands-on flight control as they fly drones and put their skills to the test in a state-of-the-art flight simulator.
But the excitement truly builds for the week of September 15-18, when our students will embark on their “Discovery Flights” at the Fairfield Airport! Each day, three lucky students will be driven to the airport, where they’ll meet the manager and experienced pilot, Bob Lyons. He’ll introduce them to the iconic Cherokee plane, equip them with official headsets, and then comes the best part: they’ll rotate through the pilot seat, actively practicing take-offs and landings with Bob as their co-pilot! Imagine the thrill of being part of controlling an actual aircraft – a truly unforgettable experience.
