Students who plan to take the SAT as part of their college admissions process can get several rounds of practice by taking the PSAT, or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.
The exam comes in three forms: the PSAT 8/9, the PSAT/NMSQT, and the PSAT 10.
The PSAT was restructured in 2023 to move to a digital format, first available to international students, then to U.S. students in 2024. The test now mirrors the SAT in terms of timing and question types, which experts say has helped test-takers.
“It’s basically a dress rehearsal for the SAT,” says Matt Woodworth, founder of college admissions consulting company Woodworth Prep. “It’s a real test and very close to the real thing. It gives you real data on exactly how you would do on the actual SAT. The other thing is it’s completely low stakes because it’s not sent to colleges.”
